The tradition
Belly binding, known as "bengkung" in Malay tradition, is a postpartum practice where a long strip of cloth is wrapped tightly around a new mother's abdomen and pelvis starting shortly after birth. It's typically part of the broader "pantang" (confinement) period, which in Malay culture often lasts about 30-44 days. The binding is believed to help the uterus contract back to size, support the abdominal muscles and lower back, realign the pelvis, and ease the transition of organs back into place after pregnancy. It's usually done daily, sometimes alongside herbal compresses, massage, and warm oils, and is often applied by a trained birth attendant or family elder rather than the mother herself, especially in the earliest days. The practice sits within a wider Southeast Asian tradition of structured postpartum care, with parallels in Indonesian, Filipino, and other regional customs with roots in Ayurvedic tradition of using a cotton sari to bind.
The session
A typical belly binding session begins with the mother settling into a comfortable, reclined position. Warm herbal oil is massaged gently into the abdomen first, encouraging circulation and easing tension in the muscles that have carried the pregnancy. A warm herbal compress may be applied next, traditionally used to support the body's release of excess "wind" and to bring a soothing warmth to the area. Then the binding begins. A long strip of soft cloth is wound around the abdomen, starting low at the hips and working upward toward the ribs, each pass snug and supportive but never restrictive. Throughout the wrapping, there's a continuous check-in — does this feel secure, does this feel like too much, can you breathe easily — so the tightness is calibrated to what the mother's body needs that day, not a fixed standard. Once secured, the mother is invited to rest, often propped with a pillow at her back, allowing the wrap to settle and her body to receive the support without effort. Each session last 60-90 minutes and includes gentle abdominal massage, warm aromatic oil application, heat application, and belly binding. We also offer instructions on self-wrapping so you can repeat it at home in the days that follow.
